JB Straubel

Co-founder and Senior Advisor of Tesla, Inc and Former Chief Technology Officer (2003 - 2019)

JB Straubel (Jeffrey B. Straubel) is part of the founding team and Former Chief Technical Officer of Tesla Inc., an electric car company based in Palo Alto, California. At Tesla, Straubel oversees the technical and engineering design of the vehicles.

JB Straubel is now co-founder and CEO of Redwood Materials. Redwood Materials is a circular economy startup that focuses on recycling complex materials such as batteries as the world transitions to electric vehicles and sustainable transportation.

As of 2019, after announcing he decided to step down as CTO of the company, Tesla announced that JB will keep actively involved in some of the core technologies and help as much as possible. To stress the importance and vital role that JB had in the creation and company growth of Tesla.

In addition to his work at Tesla, Straubel is also on the Board of Directors for Solar City. He is also a lecturer at his alma mater, Stanford University, where he teaches the popular Energy Storage Integration class in the Atmosphere and Energy Program. In a pioneering step, Tesla has also recently entered the home energy market by unveiling the Powerwall home battery — this stores energy converted from the sun via solar panels which will enable homeowners to store backup power, minimise the use of major utility providers electricity during peak hours or even possibly getting off the commercial power grid altogether.
