One of the world’s most widely recognized figures in the field of science, Dr. Michio Kaku looks to the future to predict trends affecting business, commerce, finance and technology.

Dr. Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist, best-selling author and popularizer of science. As the co-founder of string field theory (a branch of string theory), he continues Einstein’s search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory that will summarize all the physical laws of the universe. Dr. Michio Kaku earned his B.S from Harvard University, and received his Ph. D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a professor of physics, and has taught for more than 25 years at the City College of New York.

      Professor Richard Susskind OBE is an author, speaker, and independent adviser to major professional firms and to national governments. His main area of expertise is the future of professional service and, in particular, the way in which the IT and the Internet are changing the work of lawyers. He has worked on legal technology for over 30 years. He lectures internationally, has written many books, and advised on numerous government inquiries. 

      Online courts provide online judging – the determination of cases by human judges but not in physical courtrooms. Online courts also provide tools to help users understand relevant law and to formulate arguments and assemble evidence. They offer non-judicial settlements such as mediation, not as an alternative to the public court system but as part of it. In years to come, court determinations may even be made by AI-based systems.

      Richard lectures internationally and has been invited to speak in over 40 countries and has addressed audiences (in person and electronically), numbering more than 250,000. He has written and edited numerous books, including Expert Systems in Law (OUP, 1987), The Future of Law (OUP, 1996), Transforming the Law (OUP, 2000), The Susskind Interviews: Legal Experts in Changing Times (Sweet & Maxwell, 2005), The End of Lawyers? Rethinking the Nature of Legal Services (OUP, 2008), Tomorrow’s Lawyers (2013), and has written around 150 columns for The Times.

      Ms. Figueres is the former Executive Secretary the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Assuming responsibility for the international climate change negotiations after the failed Copenhagen conference of 2009, she was determined to lead the process to a universally agreed regulatory framework. Building toward that goal, she directed the successful Conferences of the Parties in Cancun 2010, Durban 2011, Doha 2012, Warsaw 2013, and Lima 2014, before culminating her efforts in the historical Paris Agreement of 2015. Throughout her tenure Ms. Figueres brought together national and sub national governments, corporations and activists, financial institutions and communities of faith, think tanks and technology providers, NGOs and parliamentarians, to jointly deliver the unprecedented climate change agreement.

      For this achievement Ms. Figueres has been credited with forging a new brand of collaborative diplomacy. Ms. Figueres was awarded the Great Cross of the Order of Merit of Germany in 1985. More recently she has been widely recognized for her six year effort to construct the necessary collaborations to deliver a global legally binding agreement that had previously seemed impossible. She was chosen as one of five 2016 Global Leaders by the Talberg Foundation and decorated as Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau of The Netherlands, received the Legion of Honor of France , the Grand Medal of the City of Paris, and the National Guayacan Medal from Costa Rica.       In the natural world a newly discovered tropical moth (Struthoscelis christianafigueresae – soon to be published) and a wasp (Pseudapanteles christianafigueresae) have been named after her. She has a long trajectory in the field of global climate change, having been a member of the Costa Rican negotiating team 1995- 2009, and having played a number of key roles in the governance of the UNFCCC before formally joining the secretariat. She initiated her life of public service as Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Costa Rica in Bonn, Germany in 1982. Moving to the USA, she was Director of Renewable Energy in the Americas (REIA) and in 1995 founded the non-profit Center for Sustainable Development of the Americas (CSDA) which she directed for eight years. 

      She has a Masters Degree in Anthropology from the London School of Economics, and a certificate in Organizational Development from Georgetown University. Ms. Figueres received honorary doctorate of law degrees from University of Massachusetts Boston in 2014 and Concordia University in 2015, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Georgetown University in 2016.       Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus is the father of microcredit, the father of social business, the founder of Grameen Bank, and of more than 50 other companies in Bangladesh. For his constant innovation and enterprise, Fortune Magazine named Professor Yunus as “one of 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time.”

      A Fulbright Scholar at Vanderbilt University, Professor Yunus received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1969. Professor Yunus returned to Bangladesh in 1972 and joined the Department of Economics, University of Chittagong, as its chairman. In 1976, Professor Yunus started to experiment with providing collateral free loans to the poor. The project was called Grameen Bank Project and later, in 1983, became a full-fledged bank for providing loans to the poor, mostly women, in rural Bangladesh. Today Grameen Bank has over 8.4 million borrowers, 97% of whom are women and disburses over one and a half billion US dollars each year.

      In 2006, Professor Yunus and Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

      Professor Muhammad Yunus is the recipient of more than 50 honorary degrees from universities across 20 countries. He has received 112 awards from 26 countries including state honors from 10 countries.

      He is one of seven individuals to have received the Nobel Peace Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United States Congressional Gold Medal. Other notable awards include the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1984), World Food Prize (1994), International Simon Bolivar Prize (1996), Sydney Peace Prize (1998), The Prince of Austurias Award for Concord (1998) and Seoul Peace Prize (2006).
